The Deputy Commissioner is responsible for implementing State Government’s programmes and policies at the grass root level and collecting information regarding the needs, facilities, responsibilities, rights and problems of the general public and making the government aware about these. In fact, the Deputy Commissioner is the government at the district level. The Deputy Commissioner acts as the link between Central and State Govts. and co-ordinates their programmes. The Deputy Commissioner evaluates the working of all district level govt. departments and overlooks the law and order situation in the district. In times of any natural calamity like fire, floods, locusts, drought, storms etc., the D.C. s the primary relief agency.
